You may have with you a filtration system and regular spot clean to ensure that the pond is having a healthy ecosystem but you need to remember that at least once a year, your pond requires clean out.
By simply doing a full clean out of your pond, the environment it has will reset. If you will attend to the plants of your pond, remove the muck buildup and repair the fixtures, you will help the inhabitants to be happier and healthier.
You may think that a full garden clean out is an overwhelming task but it is not actually despite the effort and time you spare for it. With the help of this article, pond clean out becomes easier.
First, you need to prepare your holding tank. Holding tanks are actually the ones that your fishes hang out while you are doing your clean out. The size of your tank will be dependent on the size of your fishes. You don’t have to fill the tank fully as long as your fishes are already comfortable with the level of water inside the tank.
Afterwards, you will have to use your pump sock on your pond pump so that any large debris will not be suck up since this will cause damages or even blocking. By using this sock, this will prevent the fish from possible suck up. Large fishes often avoid going nearer to a pump but if in case there will be curious fishes, a pump sock is your best option.
If you plan on your catching your fishes, the secret to this is to catch it once the water level goes down to one foot. The purpose of the one-foot water level is for the fish to have a limited area to swim away and for you to catch them easily. But put in mind that you must be gentle when you use the fish net.
Using of hose can be a good idea but if you really want to have a thorough cleaning of your pond and remove the muck, the power wash is the most effective tool.
You also need to check on your plants and lighting and to do so, make sure that your pond is drained first. This way, spotting of overgrown plants are easier. Also, this will be your opportunity to check on the entire low areas of your pond if there’s any sign of damages and other problems.
