Types of Surface Coatings on Asphalt
on 02/08/2021

In road construction, the road does not only consist of one kind of layer. Among them, there are rigid, flexible, or composite layers. The pliable layer also consists of various layers. The layers here are the layers that are often used.

The following types of surface coatings are:

A. Asphalt Concrete Layer

Asphalt Concrete or tarmac layers are a layer on road construction consisting of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, filler, and hard asphalt, which are mixed, spread, and compacted in a hot state at a certain temperature.

Laston consists of three layers, namely:

  1. Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC).
  2. Asphalt Concrete – Binder Course (AC-BC)
  3. (Asphalt Concrete-Base or AC-Base)

For more details, see the image below.

B. Macadam Penetration Layer

Macadam Penetration Layer is a pavement layer consisting of principal aggregate with uniformly graded locking aggregate which is bound by asphalt by spraying it over the main aggregate and compacting it layer by layer.

If it is used as a surface layer, after the locking aggregate is compacted, it is then sprayed with asphalt then covered with aggregate and compacted.

C. Cold Mixed Asbuton Layer

Cold Mixed Asbuton Layer is a surface layer with a mixture consisting of Ashburton, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, rejuvenator, and filler (if needed) which is mixed, spread, and cold compacted.

D. Hot Rolled Asphalt

Hot Rolled Asphalt is a cover layer consisting of a mixture of gap graded aggregate, filler, and asphalt with a certain ratio, which is mixed and compacted in a hot state at a certain temperature.

E. Asphalt Laburan

Asphalt Laburan is a cover layer consisting of a maximum grain size of 9.6 mm or 3/8 inch of the sand sprinkled asphalt layer.

Its functions include being a cover so that the surface is waterproof, not slippery, not dusty, and prevents the release of fine grains.

F. One-Layer Asphalt Application

One-Layer Asphalt Application is a cover layer consisting of a layer of asphalt that is sprinkled with one layer of uniformly graded aggregate. Maximum thickness 20 mm.

G. Double Layer Stone Laburan

Two-Layer Asphalt Laburan is a cover layer consisting of a layer of asphalt sprinkled with aggregate which is done twice in succession. Maximum thickness 35 mm.

H. Thin Layer of Asphalt Concrete or Hot Rolled Sheet

Asphalt Concrete Thin Layer is a cover layer consisting of a mixture of a lame graded aggregate, filler, and hard asphalt with a certain ratio which is mixed and compacted in a hot state at a certain temperature. Solid thickness between 25 to 30 mm.

HRS consists of two namely:

  • Hot Rolled Sheet Wearing Coarse (HRS-WC)
  • Hot Rolled Sheet Base (HRS-Base)

I. Thin Layer of Asphalt Sand

Thin Asphalt Sand Layer is a cover layer consisting of a mixture of sand and hard asphalt which is mixed, spread, and compacted in a hot state at a certain temperature. Serves as a wear layer, cover and so that the surface is flat and not slippery.

J. Thin Layer of Pure Ashburton

Pure Asbuton Thin Layer is a thin layer of pure Buton asphalt which is a cover layer, consisting of a mixture of Buton asphalt and softening material with a certain mixture ratio composition with a maximum solid thickness of 1 cm.

K. Stone Matrix Asphalt

Stone Matrix Asphalt is a type of hot mix asphalt concrete with coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, filler material, and asphalt which forms a mortar or species with asphalt as a binder which is mixed in hot conditions.

Those are some types of surface coatings. Hopefully useful for all of us. amen
